Back at Hull parkrun this morning, and what a session it turned out to be. It’s one of the flattest, fastest 5k loops going, and it delivered exactly what I needed — 15.59, my first sub 16 since surgery last year and my quickest parkrun in almost two years. I talk through the whole thing in the video, but I wanted to put some words down too because this one means a lot.
The rebuild after surgery has been long and patient, full of small steps rather than big leaps. Every session, every controlled effort, every little confidence boost has been part of piecing things back together. Last weekend’s York 10k gave me a proper lift going through halfway even quicker than today’s pace, but there’s something about getting an official fast time on paper that hits differently. Parkrun has that effect — the community, the routine, the simplicity of it all makes these milestones feel real in a way other sessions don’t.
Today wasn’t really about the number, even though 15.59 is one I’m chuffed with. It was about feeling smooth again. Feeling efficient. Feeling like the work I’ve been putting in is finally showing on the road. Those are the moments that tell you the fitness is coming back, the mechanics are settling, and the momentum is building properly now.
I’ve got a few more races lined up over the next couple of weeks, and the plan is to keep sharpening before switching gears into full marathon training — the thing I know best and where I feel most at home. The comeback continues, one step at a time, and I’m genuinely excited about where it’s heading. Have a watch of the full video for the whole story from this morning.
