This week’s video takes me over to Graves Park for what’s got to be one of the hilliest parkruns going in Sheffield. I’ve run plenty of tough courses over the years but this one really doesn’t let you settle at any point, it’s a proper rollercoaster from start to finish and I wanted to get it on camera to show you exactly what it’s like.
That opening climb catches you straight away, dragging you into the trees before the course just keeps rolling, twisting and rising again. There’s no easing into this one. It’s the kind of run that demands patience on the ups and a bit of commitment on the downs, and after nearly a decade of running every single day I still find courses like this properly test you in a different way to a flat, fast parkrun.
The good news is the downhill sections give plenty back. Fast, flowing stretches where you can really open up and let momentum carry you along, which makes all that climbing worth it. It’s a course that rewards smart pacing too, go out too hot on those early hills and you’ll pay for it later, so there’s a nice tactical element to it as well as the physical challenge.
If you’re the type of runner who enjoys a hilly parkrun with a bit of character, Graves Park is well worth seeking out, it’s tough, it’s scenic, and it’s the sort of course that sticks in your legs and your memory long after you’ve finished. Have a watch of the full video to see the climbs, the drops and the woodland paths for yourself, and let me know if you’ve run it too.

From the athletes I coach
18:23 parkrun
Like clockwork. Whatever I set, he hits it on the nose. Training comes in peaks and troughs as it does for all of us, and he is a big confidence player, so the job is keeping the belief up when a block goes quiet. Down to 18:23 at parkrun and a few sub-40 10ks along the way.
