6 Sessions In: Am I On Track to Beat 2:24 in Valencia?

Two weeks into the Valencia block and my watch is already trying to have a word with me. It reckons 2:30. My PB says 2:24:35. So in this one I’ve gone through the six sessions from these first couple of weeks properly, split by split, to work out which of those two numbers I should actually believe.

It’s easy to look at one bad number on your wrist and panic, or one good one and get carried away, so I wanted to lay out what each session was actually for, not just what it said. There’s the short sharp stuff, the mile reps, some marathon pace work on the treadmill, a road session at race pace, a progressive long run, and then the run nobody rates but everybody needs. I’ve written each one out properly in the description if you fancy running a version of them yourself.

I also handed the whole lot over to Naomi and asked her for her honest verdict, keeping it short. Whether she agreed with me or not, you’ll have to watch and find out, but it’s always useful having someone else look at your numbers when you’re too close to your own training to be objective about it.

Seventy days still to go, so plenty of time for the picture to change either way. This is early days data, not a verdict on the whole block, and I think that’s an important distinction when you’re building towards a race. Have a watch of the full video for all six sessions and Naomi’s take, and let me know which of the sessions you reckon would be your weakest.

Manchester Marathon, April 2026

“Gareth took the time to understand me, adapt my training when needed, and support me through the ups and downs of a demanding marathon block. The sessions were clear, easy to follow, and gave me the structure and confidence I needed to keep progressing. His advice, flexibility and encouragement helped me become a better, stronger and more consistent runner, and ultimately played a huge part in helping me finally achieve my sub-3 marathon goal.”
